Design and Technology

Design and Technology is an over subscribed subject, with students eager to participate in all areas. The appeal comes from television programmes such as Robot Wars, Scrapheap Challenge, Grand Designs, Masterchef and Fashion Fix, keeping the subject with a high profile in the public eye.

It is an exciting time to be teaching and learning Design and Technology. The new AQA GCSE syllabus means that students are getting the chance to explore a wider range of ideas theoretically as well as practically, along with the more practical BTEC courses we offer.

In Design and Technology at Key Stage 3, students rotate every six weeks through six subjects including Food, Textiles, Resistant Materials, Systems and Control, Computer Aided Design and Graphics. Each topic follows the same format from research, through to design, planning, making and evaluating.

Design and Technology is the subject that most readily combines the topics taught in other curriculum areas. It is no longer solely in the realm of the practical areas but firmly addresses the key skill issues that face us at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
