Sixth Form Admissions

Admission to Appleton Sixth Form

Entrance to Appleton Sixth Form is dependent on academic achievement in Key Stage 4 and all students must satisfy the entry criteria if they are to secure a place in the Sixth Form.

Option 1 - A levels Pathway

Entry requirements: an average of 40+ points from your best eight GCSEs including at least a 6 grade in English and a 6 grade in Mathematics.

You must also meet the subject specific entry requirements of the courses you select.

Option 2 - A levels/BTEC combination

Entry requirements: an average of 35+ points from your best eight GCSEs.

You must also meet the subject specific entry requirements of the courses you select.

In most cases you will select at least one vocational course plus one or two A levels. It is possible to study two vocational courses. (This does not apply to BTEC Sport Science and BTEC Business)

Option 3 - BTEC vocational Pathway

Entry requirements: an average of 35+ points from your best eight GCSEs.

You must meet the subject specific entry requirements of the course you select.

If you have not achieved grade 5 in English and/or Maths by the end of Key Stage 4, you will continue with the study of these subjects.

Students who fail to achieve the entry requirements are likely to struggle with the academic rigour and demands of study in the Sixth Form and should be realistic about their potential for academic study and the subjects they choose.

To calculate your average GCSE points score; use the table below to determine the points that each grade equates to. Add together the points awarded to your best eight GCSEs and divide that total by eight.

 Grade at GCSE  A*  A
English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and MFL 8/9  7
Points this grade equates to 58 52 46 40 34 28 22 16

Although not part of the entry criteria, students applying to the Sixth Form should be ready to demonstrate a track record of:

  • Very good attendance and punctuality
  • A positive attitude in lessons
  • Good relationships with peers and teachers
  • The ability to work independently
  • Punctual completion of homework
  • Contribution to the wider life of the school
