Dragons Den Business Challenge Day
We held a very successful Dragons Den Business Challenge Day in school on 11th March, 2009 for Year 10 business students.
Following an introduction to the day, students were divided into teams of 8 in preparation for the “6 Missions” of business plan construction:-
- Product Idea
- Unique Selling Point
- Marketing
- Financial Planning
- Presentation Skills
- Competition
To kickstart the day, Fraser Doherty from SuperJam came into school to deliver a motivational presentation. Fraser started making jam at the age of 14 using his Gran’s secret recipe and roughly 5 years later now supplies all of the major retailers such as Waitrose, Morrison and Tesco with his SuperJam, which is made using 100% fruit and fruit juices using no artificial ingredients. Fraser said “I feel events like this are excellent as they encourage students to think about starting their own businesses and developing new products, establishing charities and helping others which is really important in times like these. It shows students that they can achieve anything if they put their mind to it”.
After an introduction to each Mission, teams spent 20 minutes or so developing their ideas and then putting these ideas to practical use. The final hour of the day was spent with teams presenting their business ideas and plans to a panel of judges.
Qualifying heats and the Grand Final eventually led to a team called Rush being declared the winning team on the day. Rush’s product was a chocolate bar with different flavoured liquid centres which came with edible straws and fun activity stickers. As a prize each member of the winning team was presented with some gift vouchers.
We would like to thank the 6 members of staff from HSBC who volunteered to assist us on the day as mentors and motivators and who also helped with the judging of the event.

Year 10 Mock Interview Day
We held a very successful Year 10 Mock Interview Day on Friday 30th January, 2009. The aim of this event was to give students some general interview experience, following on from the workshops students had attended, organised by the school, on both Interview Techniques and CV Writing. Students had completed an Application Form and had written a CV prior to the event and these were used by Interviewers during the interview. The dress code for the day was smart, business dress as is fitting for an interview although students were told that there was no need for them to go out and buy new clothes for their interviews as their black trousers/skirt would suffice with either a shirt and tie or blouse.
This year we were very fortunate to have 40 volunteers from a variety of businesses/occupations who came in to the school for the day to conduct the interviews. Interviewers were briefed that students were not being interviewed for a specific job/role and were to be asked general questions to enable students to develop their interview technique. Each student was out of lessons for roughly half an hour in order for their interviews to take place and all students were given some verbal feedback at the end of their interviews.
